New Delhi: India signed off their Women’s U18 Asia Cup campaign on a high note by defeating Korea 3-0 in the third-place playoff to secure the bronze medal on Saturday.
Sandeepa Kumari, captain Sweety Kujur and Nousheen Naz scored the goals as the Indian side delivered a dominant performance to finish on the podium after narrowly missing out on a place in the final following a shootout defeat to China in the semifinals.
India got off to a flying start when Sandeepa Kumari found the net in just the second minute, giving her team an early advantage. The Indian attack continued to put pressure on the Korean defence and was rewarded again in the 16th minute when skipper Sweety Kujur doubled the lead with a field goal.
Holding a comfortable 2-0 advantage, India remained in control throughout the match. The lead was further extended in the 33rd minute when tournament top-scorer Nousheen Naz scored her 12th goal of the competition, effectively putting the result beyond Korea’s reach.
The Indian defence remained solid throughout the contest, denying Korea any significant scoring opportunities and ensuring a clean sheet. The team comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to seal a convincing victory and the bronze medal.
Sandeepa Kumari was named Player of the Match for her impressive performance and opening goal.
The podium finish provides a strong end to India’s campaign and highlights the promising talent emerging in the country’s junior women’s hockey setup.
