Chandigarh, June 1: Punjab has achieved a significant milestone in the agricultural sector by clearing 100 percent dues of sugarcane farmers during the 2025-26 crushing season. According to the Punjab Government, sugar mills across the state procured a record 167.20 lakh quintals of sugarcane and released payments worth ₹695.36 crore to farmers.

The government stated that the achievement reflects its continued focus on farmer welfare, crop diversification and strengthening the rural economy. Efforts are being made to encourage farmers to move beyond the traditional wheat-paddy cycle and adopt alternative crops such as sugarcane.

Government Promoting Sugarcane Cultivation

Sugarcane cultivation plays an important role in supporting rural livelihoods and generating employment opportunities across Punjab. To encourage farmers, cooperative sugar mills have introduced several initiatives, including the supply of quality seeds, subsidised agricultural machinery, fertilisers, herbicides and pesticides.

Farmers are also being provided soil-testing facilities, awareness camps and training programmes to improve productivity and adopt better farming practices. Officials said these efforts have contributed to increased confidence among farmers and higher sugarcane production in recent years.

The Punjab Government has also prioritised timely payments to growers, ensuring that farmers receive their dues without unnecessary delays.

Farmers Welcome Timely Payments

Pal Singh, Sarpanch of village Huthian and a farmer associated with Batala Sugar Mill, welcomed the government’s decision. He said he has been cultivating sugarcane for nearly three decades and currently grows the crop on around 20 acres of land.

According to him, direct transfer of payments into farmers’ bank accounts has brought major relief. He said several farmers received payments ranging from ₹10 lakh to ₹20 lakh directly into their accounts, helping them manage agricultural expenses and plan future cultivation.

Pal Singh added that timely payments have increased farmers’ confidence and encouraged many to expand sugarcane cultivation instead of relying solely on wheat and paddy crops.

Another farmer, Lakhbir Singh from village Alowal, also expressed satisfaction over the payment process. He said farmers associated with Batala Sugar Mill have benefited from timely disbursement of dues, which has eased financial pressure and strengthened their trust in the system.

Lakhbir Singh stated that if payments continue to be released on time, more farmers will be encouraged to adopt sugarcane cultivation. He also appreciated the efforts of the mill’s officers and employees for their contribution towards efficient operations and better performance.

The Punjab Government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring timely payments to farmers and supporting agricultural diversification. Officials believe that encouraging sugarcane cultivation can help improve farmers’ income while contributing to the growth of the state’s rural economy.
