Chandigarh, June 1: Punjab Government’s Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana (MMSY) continues to provide financial relief and quality healthcare to families across the state. Under the scheme, eligible families can avail cashless treatment worth up to ₹10 lakh annually, helping them access medical care without worrying about treatment expenses.
The scheme has witnessed a strong response from the public, with more than 45 lakh people already registered. Thousands of beneficiaries have received treatment through the initiative, especially during medical emergencies.
One such beneficiary is 37-year-old Gurpreet Kaur from Bathinda, who recently underwent a successful heart procedure at AIIMS Bathinda. With the support of the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana, she was able to receive timely treatment without facing a major financial burden.
Hidden Heart Condition Discovered
Like many others, Gurpreet Kaur was living a normal life, taking care of her family and household responsibilities. However, doctors later discovered that she had a congenital heart condition that had gone undetected for years.
Medical examinations revealed that she was suffering from a large Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), a 22-millimetre hole between the upper chambers of her heart. Doctors explained that the condition was causing abnormal blood flow and putting extra strain on her heart. If left untreated, it could have resulted in serious complications, including heart failure.
The diagnosis came as a shock to the family. Along with concerns about her health, the cost of treatment became another major worry. Gurpreet recalled that her first concern after learning about the condition was how the family would manage the medical expenses.
Successful Treatment at AIIMS Bathinda
Following medical advice, Gurpreet underwent a specialised cardiac procedure at AIIMS Bathinda on May 5, 2026. During the procedure, doctors successfully closed the defect using a 24-mm Amplatzer Septal Occluder device.
The operation was performed under expert supervision and was completed successfully without any complications. Doctors said the procedure would help restore normal blood flow and reduce the risk of future heart-related problems.
Family members described the hours during the procedure as extremely stressful. They waited anxiously outside the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory, hoping for positive news. When doctors informed them that the treatment had been successful, it brought immense relief to the entire family.
Financial Relief Through Sehat Yojana
The Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana covered the treatment cost, estimated at around ₹1 lakh. This financial support helped the family avoid a significant medical burden and ensured that treatment was not delayed due to financial concerns.
Punjab Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh said Gurpreet’s recovery highlights the importance of accessible healthcare and financial protection. He stated that no family should be deprived of quality treatment because of economic difficulties and that public healthcare schemes play a vital role in saving lives.
According to data from the State Health Agency (SHA), Punjab, a total of 175,210 patients have benefited under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana so far. Collectively, beneficiaries have received 343,370 treatments under the scheme, with total expenditure reaching ₹581.90 crore.
Officials said the scheme continues to strengthen access to quality healthcare across Punjab and is providing much-needed support to families facing medical emergencies. For Gurpreet Kaur and many others, the initiative has become a lifeline, offering both medical care and financial security when it is needed the most.
