Ferozepur: A well-known businessman was shot dead in broad daylight after two motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire on him in the busy main market of Makhu town on Sunday, sparking panic among traders and residents.
The deceased has been identified as Gurcharan Singh Gaba, owner of the popular Gaba General Store. According to initial reports, Gaba was present at his shop when two unidentified attackers arrived on a motorcycle and fired multiple rounds at him before fleeing the scene.
The shooting created chaos in the crowded marketplace as shopkeepers hurriedly shut their establishments and customers rushed to safety. Local residents immediately shifted the injured businessman to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Senior Superintendent of Police Bhupinder Singh, along with other senior officers, visited the crime scene and supervised the preliminary investigation. Police teams have launched an extensive probe, examining CCTV footage from the area and gathering forensic and eyewitness evidence to determine the motive behind the killing.
Speaking to reporters, SSP Bhupinder Singh said investigators have secured several important leads and are exploring multiple angles. He expressed confidence that the accused would be identified and arrested soon.
Police officials said the motive behind the murder remains unclear, and further investigation is underway.
Reacting to the incident, District Congress Committee President and former Zira MLA Kulbir Singh condemned the killing and alleged that the law-and-order situation in the region had worsened. He demanded the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and strict action to ensure public safety and restore confidence among residents.
