Kedarnath: The annual Kedarnath Yatra has been temporarily suspended by state authorities following continuous torrential rainfall and highly adverse weather conditions across Uttarakhand. The administration implemented the precautionary measure immediately after the India Meteorological Department issued an “Orange Alert” forecasting severe weather. Prioritizing pilgrim safety above all else, local officials have put extensive arrangements in place to house stranded travellers at designated safe holding zones and transit camps located along the pilgrimage route.
The relentless downpours combined with the fragile geological structure of the Himalayan region have significantly escalated the risk of dangerous landslides along the mountain tracks. Himalayan administrative officials clarified that the suspension is a preventative step to mitigate potential hazards, reassuring the public that the pilgrimage will be resumed in a phased manner as soon as weather conditions return to normalcy.
According to Garhwal Commissioner Anand Swarup, thousands of pilgrims have been safely intercepted at various transit points along the highway to prevent overcrowding at the high-altitude shrine. Pilgrims currently arriving at base stations have been strictly instructed to halt their onward journey and remain at established tourist complexes in Rishikesh and Srinagar. Both commercial motorists and devotees have been strongly urged by law enforcement to strictly comply with the state safety guidelines and avoid traveling through vulnerable stretches during night hours.
The weather department has forecast continued heavy rainfall, lightning, and high-velocity winds over the next few hours across the state. To avert any untoward incidents, police teams have completely halted the movement of all vehicles heading toward the shrine beyond the Srinagar sector. Additionally, thousands of pilgrims who were already en route have been systematically accommodated in secure shelters and hotels situated across key base locations, including Guptkashi, Phata, Rampur, Sherasni, Sonprayag, and Gaurikund, where basic amenities and medical support are being actively provided by the district administration.
