Chandigarh: A spell of severe heat continues to grip Punjab and Chandigarh, with the weather department issuing a strong heatwave warning for May 27 across several districts. While residents are expected to endure another day of sweltering conditions, forecasts indicate a significant shift in weather from Wednesday onwards, bringing the possibility of rain, hailstorms and cooler temperatures.

The Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh reported that weather conditions remained dry throughout Punjab over the last 24 hours, allowing temperatures to remain unusually high. Bathinda recorded the state’s highest temperature at 45.8 degrees Celsius, reflecting the intensity of the ongoing heat spell.

The region is currently passing through Nautapa, traditionally considered the harshest phase of summer when temperatures often touch extreme levels. Health experts have cautioned that prolonged exposure to the sun during this period can trigger dehydration, weakness, fatigue and even heatstroke.

Red Flag for Several Districts

The heatwave alert covers Mohali, Patiala, Ludhiana, Bathinda, Mansa and Sangrur, where daytime temperatures and hot winds are expected to remain severe. Authorities have urged people to avoid outdoor movement during peak afternoon hours unless absolutely necessary.

Sudden Weather Shift Predicted

According to forecasters, atmospheric conditions are likely to change sharply from May 28, increasing the chances of thunderstorms, lightning activity, strong gusty winds and hail in scattered areas.

Wind speeds could touch 60 to 70 kilometres per hour, especially in districts such as Mohali, Patiala, Rupnagar, Hoshiarpur and Gurdaspur, where unstable weather systems are expected to develop.

Relief Likely by Weekend

The weather department expects light to moderate rainfall between May 29 and May 30, which may cause temperatures to fall by 6 to 8 degrees Celsius across many parts of the state.

This drop is expected to offer considerable relief to residents who have been facing oppressive heat over the past several days.

Officials have advised citizens to remain hydrated, wear light clothing and stay updated with local weather advisories as Punjab prepares for a dramatic transition from scorching heat to stormy weather over the next 48 hours.
