Tianjin: In a significant diplomatic engagement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday, signaling New Delhi’s intent to re-energize ties with Beijing amid shifting global alignments.

During the meeting, held on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to building relations rooted in mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity. Speaking in Hindi, he underscored the importance of maintaining constructive engagement, particularly following last year’s military disengagement along the contested border.

“Since the disengagement, peace and stability have largely prevailed along our frontiers,” Modi noted, adding that the Special Representatives from both sides have made headway on border management frameworks, a development he termed “encouraging.”

This marks Modi’s first visit to China in seven years and comes at a time when India’s traditionally close ties with Washington are experiencing strain due to recent trade-related tensions. The meeting between the two Asian leaders is being viewed as an effort to rebalance regional partnerships and foster renewed dialogue following a period of prolonged diplomatic frostiness.

The meeting was attended by senior officials, including India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, highlighting the strategic weight of the dialogue.

PMModi also highlighted recent steps taken to normalize bilateral exchanges, including the resumption of direct flights between India and China and the revival of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, a pilgrimage route of cultural and religious significance.

While no major agreements were signed during the meeting, both leaders appeared to signal cautious optimism toward improving ties. With the SCO summit continuing through September 1, further conversations and side meetings may yet follow.

Observers see the Modi-Xi meeting as a test of political will on both sides to look beyond recent frictions and seek common ground in regional and global forums.
