New Delhi: The Padma Awards 2026 ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan turned deeply emotional as veteran actor Hema Malini accepted the Padma Vibhushan on behalf of her late husband, legendary Bollywood star Dharmendra. Their daughter Ahana Deol was seen in tears during the special moment.

Dharmendra, who passed away in November 2025 at the age of 89, was posthumously honoured with India’s second-highest civilian award in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema over a career spanning more than six decades.

The ceremony was attended by President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several prominent dignitaries. As Hema Malini walked to receive the honour, the atmosphere inside Rashtrapati Bhavan became emotional, with family members visibly moved by the tribute to the late actor.

Cameras captured Ahana Deol struggling to hold back tears while watching her mother receive the prestigious award in memory of her father.

Earlier this year, after the government announced the Padma Vibhushan for Dharmendra, Hema Malini had expressed pride and gratitude in a heartfelt social media message. She described the honour as recognition of the actor’s immense contribution to the Indian film industry, a sentiment widely echoed by fans and members of the cinema fraternity.

Known as one of Bollywood’s most influential stars, Dharmendra built an iconic career through a range of memorable performances in action films, family dramas, romantic classics and comedy hits. His performances in films such as Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Seeta Aur Geeta, Yaadon Ki Baaraat and Phool Aur Patthar remain celebrated across generations.

Often referred to as Bollywood’s original “He-Man,” Dharmendra earned admiration not only for his screen presence but also for his humility and enduring popularity among audiences.

Following his death last year, tributes had poured in from across the entertainment industry, political circles and fans worldwide. Many remembered him as one of Hindi cinema’s most respected and loved personalities whose legacy continues to influence Indian filmmaking.

The posthumous Padma Vibhushan is being seen as one of the highest recognitions of Dharmendra’s lasting impact on Indian cinema and culture.
