Chandigarh: Punjab is strengthening maternal and neonatal healthcare through the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana, which is providing cashless treatment to families facing high-risk pregnancies and critical newborn health conditions. According to data from the State Health Agency (SHA), over 7,300 maternity and neonatal care cases have been treated under the scheme till May 25, with total expenditure exceeding ₹7.04 crore.

Of these cases, more than 5,300 were high-risk caesarean deliveries, accounting for ₹6.37 crore in treatment costs. The scheme has become a major support system for women requiring surgical intervention due to complications such as prolonged labour, fetal distress, maternal health issues and previous caesarean deliveries. Beneficiaries from across Punjab have reported receiving timely and completely cashless treatment, reducing the financial burden on families.

The scheme is also supporting critical neonatal care, with 2,094 newborns receiving treatment under various care packages. These include basic neonatal care, special neonatal ICU support and intensive neonatal treatment for premature and critically ill infants. Officials said the initiative is helping improve access to quality healthcare for mothers and newborns while protecting economically vulnerable families from expensive medical costs.
