New Delhi: Expressing strong disapproval over the way aspects of the investigation have unfolded, the Supreme Court on Monday said it was “deeply pained” by certain developments linked to the death of former model-turned-actor Twisha Sharma and urged the media to report the matter with restraint.

The 33-year-old was found dead at her residence in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area on May 12. While her family has alleged dowry harassment and abetment to suicide, her in-laws have disputed the claims, suggesting she was struggling with substance addiction. Police have registered a case against her husband, Samarth Singh, a lawyer, and her mother-in-law, former district judge Giribala Singh.

Hearing the matter, a bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi emphasised that the investigation must remain “fair, independent and unbiased,” and should not be influenced by external narratives or public commentary.

The court expressed concern over the growing media attention surrounding the case, stating that repeated circulation of statements from either side was adding to the distress of the families involved. The bench specifically requested media organisations to avoid turning sensitive statements into “sound bites” and to refrain from shaping public opinion while the investigation is still underway.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Madhya Pradesh government, told the court that media scrutiny had played a role in prompting swift action in the case. He also remarked on the broader social implications of such incidents, describing it as a reminder for families to prioritise well-being in difficult marital situations.

The apex court noted the submission that efforts would be made to consider handing over the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to ensure further transparency and neutrality.

At the same time, the bench urged both the victim’s family and the accused side to present their statements directly before investigating authorities instead of engaging in public discussions, warning that media trials could prejudice the ongoing probe.

The court also appealed to the press and the public to avoid speculation and allow the investigation to proceed without interference, expressing confidence that the matter would reach a lawful conclusion through proper legal channels.

The suo motu proceedings were disposed of after the court’s observations and directions regarding responsible reporting and procedural fairness in the case.
