Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday said his government would follow a “zero tolerance” policy against vandalism and violence carried out under the guise of religious slogans.
The Chief Minister issued the warning a day after protests linked to recent bulldozer action in Kolkata’s Tiljala area turned violent in the minority-dominated Park Circus locality.
According to officials, protesters allegedly hurled stones at police personnel, resulting in injuries to several officers and damage to public property and vehicles. Police said the unrest was connected to administrative action against illegal structures.
Addressing the media after meeting injured police personnel, Adhikari said six police officers and two CRPF jawans were hurt during the violence.
“So far, 40 people have been arrested in connection with the incident,” he said.
Sending a stern message against lawlessness, the Chief Minister said the government would not hesitate to take strict legal action against those attacking security personnel or damaging public property.
“People can place their demands and grievances, but stone-pelting while raising religious slogans will not be tolerated. I appeal to people not to indulge in such acts. Do not think the previous government is still there,” Adhikari said.
Police have intensified security arrangements in sensitive areas following the clashes, while further investigation into the incident is underway.
