New Delhi, May 5, 2026: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Monday made a strong political pitch during a meeting with party MLAs from Punjab at Kapurthala House in Delhi, asserting that the state is witnessing an unusual trend of “pro-incumbency” even after four years of governance.

The meeting was attended by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and came shortly after AAP legislators submitted a memorandum to the President. Addressing the gathering, Kejriwal said that the final year before elections is typically marked by dissatisfaction with the ruling government, but Punjab, he claimed, is experiencing the opposite.

“It has been four years since our government was formed, and what we are seeing today is not anti-incumbency but clear pro-incumbency,” he said, adding that feedback from villages, towns, and urban areas suggests growing public approval for the government’s work.

Kejriwal emphasized that such a trend is rare in Indian politics and attributed it to what he described as consistent delivery of public services and welfare measures. He argued that the government’s focus on tangible outcomes rather than rhetoric has helped build trust among citizens.

Focus on Development Narrative, Sharp Attack on BJP

Highlighting development initiatives, Kejriwal pointed to large-scale infrastructure projects underway in Punjab. He said that approximately 44,000 kilometres of roads are being developed across the state, with around 9,000 kilometres already completed and the remaining work progressing rapidly.

He described the scale of construction as unprecedented, noting that both urban and rural areas are witnessing extensive road development. In addition to infrastructure, he also underlined efforts to strengthen sports facilities, stating that hundreds of high-quality playgrounds have been built in villages, with plans to expand such infrastructure further.

Kejriwal also referred to improvements in basic civic services, including the cleaning of ponds, better irrigation access, and daytime electricity supply for farmers. He said these measures have reduced hardships for rural communities and improved overall productivity.

Alongside highlighting achievements, the AAP leader launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of weakening democratic institutions. He alleged that central agencies are being misused and that political strategies such as vote manipulation, defections, and pressure tactics are being employed to influence electoral outcomes.

Citing his own electoral experience in Delhi, Kejriwal claimed that a large number of votes were removed from voter lists, which he described as a serious threat to democratic processes. He warned that such practices, if unchecked, could undermine public trust in elections across the country.

He further argued that similar patterns are being observed in multiple states, raising broader concerns about the health of India’s democratic framework.

Punjab Elections Framed as Crucial Political Test

Positioning the upcoming Punjab elections as a decisive moment, Kejriwal said the contest would go beyond political rivalry and reflect a larger battle to protect democratic values. He urged party MLAs and workers to intensify grassroots outreach and directly engage with voters.

According to him, party representatives must communicate the government’s work and counter what he termed as “misinformation campaigns” by opposition parties. He stressed that public awareness would be key in shaping electoral outcomes.

Kejriwal also accused the BJP of neglecting Punjab’s interests despite being in power at the Centre. He alleged that the state has not received adequate financial or institutional support and warned that certain decisions could adversely affect Punjab’s resources and autonomy.

Drawing a historical analogy, he referred to Punjab’s role in defending the nation during times of external threats and suggested that the state would once again play a defining role—this time in safeguarding democratic principles.

He called on party members to remain focused and committed, emphasizing that electoral success would depend on sustained effort and direct engagement with people. He expressed confidence that the party’s governance record would resonate with voters.

Concluding his address, Kejriwal said the Aam Aadmi Party remains committed to upholding constitutional values and ensuring transparent governance. He reiterated that the popularity of the Punjab government is rooted in its work and predicted that this support would translate into electoral success in the coming months.
