Amritsar: The Amritsar Commissionerate Police achieved a significant breakthrough today, May 5, following a swift response to a violent shooting incident in the Verka area. The operation was initiated after patrolling teams near the railway crossing received intelligence regarding a clash between two rival groups that involved the discharge of firearms. Upon arriving at the scene, investigators were informed by a complainant that while he was out for his morning walk, two vehicles carrying approximately eight to nine armed youths intercepted him. The assailants, equipped with pistols and sharp-edged weapons, allegedly fired warning shots into the air before direct shots were aimed at the individual with the intent to kill. Fortunately, the complainant narrowly escaped injury, and the suspects fled the scene as locals began to gather.

Following the initial investigation, police teams conducted a targeted raid at the residence of a suspect identified as Nav. During the operation, several individuals arrived at the location and immediately opened fire upon sighting the police personnel. This led to a high-stakes pursuit that eventually moved toward the local bus stand. One of the suspects, identified as Krishna Sonik, reportedly engaged in a direct exchange of fire with the officers. In an act of self-defence, the police returned fire, resulting in Sonik sustaining gunshot wounds to both legs. He was subsequently apprehended and transported to the Civil Hospital in Amritsar for medical treatment, where he remains under police custody.

In the ensuing crackdown, the police also managed to arrest two other accomplices, Ranjit Singh, known as Bobby, and Gautam Mehra. Bobby had initially attempted to evade capture while armed but was tracked down alongside Mehra. During the arrests, law enforcement officials recovered a .32 bore pistol used during the commission of the crime. A formal case has been registered at the Verka Police Station under various sections of the relevant penal codes, and a comprehensive investigation is currently underway to identify any further participants in the organized attack. This successful operation underscores the local administration’s commitment to maintaining law and order and responding decisively to armed criminal activity within the city.
