Cool Winds and Storm Warning Persist Across Punjab as Temperatures Dip

Chandigarh: A shift in weather conditions continues to bring relief across Punjab and Chandigarh, with cooler winds sweeping the region and temperatures dropping noticeably below seasonal averages.

According to the Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature has fallen several degrees below normal, easing the impact of the recent heatwave. However, the respite comes with a warning, as an ‘Orange Alert’ remains in place for Monday, signalling the likelihood of thunderstorms, rainfall, and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 60 km/h. Hailstorms are also expected in multiple districts.

Weather officials have indicated that several parts of the state could witness intense activity, particularly in districts such as Ludhiana, Patiala and Sangrur, where stronger winds and isolated hail events are likely. Meanwhile, other regions including Amritsar and Jalandhar may experience moderate thunderstorms accompanied by steady winds.

Despite the unstable conditions, temperatures across most districts have remained below the 40°C mark, with only a few areas in the southern belt recording relatively higher readings. The overall dip—ranging between one to five degrees—has provided temporary comfort to residents.

Meteorologists attribute the changing weather to an active western disturbance over neighbouring regions, along with a cyclonic circulation influencing northern plains. These systems are expected to keep conditions unsettled over the next few days.

The forecast suggests continued chances of rain and thunderstorms through the week, with intermittent showers and gusty winds likely until at least May 7. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious, particularly in areas prone to strong winds and hail, as weather patterns remain unpredictable.
