Early Showers Flood Ludhiana Streets, Highlight Drainage Shortcomings Ahead of Monsoon

Ludhiana: A brief spell of pre-monsoon rain on Sunday morning led to widespread waterlogging in parts of Ludhiana, exposing gaps in the city’s drainage preparedness just weeks before the monsoon season.

Several low-lying localities experienced water accumulation within hours of the downpour, disrupting traffic and daily routines. Busy stretches like Ferozepur Road witnessed stagnant water on both the main road and adjoining service lanes, while an underpass near Lodhi Club saw rapid flooding, forcing vehicles to move cautiously through submerged sections.

Residents from areas such as New Shivpuri, Haibowal, Madhopuri, and Sherpur Chowk reported similar issues, raising concerns about the effectiveness of ongoing desilting and drainage maintenance drives. Many pointed out that these locations had already been marked as vulnerable by the Municipal Corporation.

Civic authorities had earlier stated that cleaning of sewer lines and road gullies was in progress across key zones. However, Sunday’s rainfall suggested that several trouble spots remain unresolved, sparking apprehension about the city’s readiness for heavier and sustained rains.

Meanwhile, faults in drainage infrastructure along the elevated corridor on Ferozepur Road added to the problem. Damaged pipes were seen leaking water onto roads below, worsening water accumulation and creating hazards for commuters.

Citizens have urged authorities to carry out urgent repairs and strengthen drainage systems to prevent recurring flooding, especially with the monsoon season approaching.
