New Delhi: In a major political development that could reshape parliamentary equations, seven Members of Parliament from the Aam Aadmi Party have announced their resignation from the party and claimed they now qualify for a formal merger with the BJP in the Rajya Sabha.
The announcement was made at a press conference led by AAP MP Raghav Chadha, alongside Sandeep Pathak and Ashok Mittal.
According to Chadha, the seven MPs leaving the party include Harbhajan Singh, Vikramjit Singh Sahney, Rajinder Gupta and Swati Maliwal, among others. He said written communication regarding their resignations has been submitted to the relevant parliamentary authorities.
Claiming the support of more than two-thirds of AAP’s Rajya Sabha strength, Chadha said the group would seek merger with the BJP under constitutional provisions related to legislative splits and mergers, arguing the move would not attract anti-defection provisions.
The development, if formalised, could mark one of the biggest political setbacks for AAP in Parliament and significantly alter the party’s presence in the Upper House.
The announcement is expected to trigger major political reactions, with attention now shifting to the legal and procedural aspects of the claimed merger and its implications under anti-defection law.
Further developments are awaited on recognition of the move by parliamentary authorities.
