Chennai: Actor-turned-politician Vijay has appealed to the Election Commission to extend polling hours in Tamil Nadu, citing large-scale voter inconvenience due to transport disruptions and long queues at polling stations.
In a formal letter addressed to the Chief Election Commissioner, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief—who is contesting from Tiruchirappalli East and Perambur constituencies—requested that voting be extended by two hours, allowing citizens to cast their ballots until 8:00 pm.
Highlighting the situation on the ground, Vijay pointed out that many voters have been delayed in reaching polling booths due to inadequate public transport and overcrowding at major transit points. He stressed that extended waiting times and logistical challenges could prevent eligible voters from exercising their democratic right.
The letter emphasized that a significant number of people were still in queues or attempting to reach polling stations, and extending voting hours would ensure that no voter is deprived of the opportunity to participate. Vijay argued that such a move would help uphold the principles of free and fair elections.
He also urged authorities to take immediate steps to address transportation issues and improve coordination, particularly in urban areas where congestion has been reported.
Polling in Tamil Nadu is being conducted in a single phase, with a large voter turnout expected. The Election Commission has yet to respond publicly to the request, but officials are closely monitoring the situation across constituencies.
The development adds a new dimension to the ongoing election process, as parties and candidates continue to raise concerns aimed at ensuring maximum voter participation.
