Chandigarh: Large parts of north India are likely to experience intensifying heat conditions over the coming days, with temperatures expected to climb by up to 4°C in states such as Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh by April 25, according to the India Meteorological Department.
Weather officials said the rising mercury will continue to fuel heatwave conditions across several regions, with little relief expected until the end of the week. After April 25, temperatures are likely to stabilize and remain largely unchanged for the next couple of days.
The heatwave, which began around April 18 in Haryana, has gradually spread to Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and parts of Madhya Pradesh. The national capital is expected to bear the brunt, with daytime temperatures likely to cross 44°C. A yellow alert has been issued for Delhi, warning residents of severe heat conditions through April 24.
Data from the Met Department showed that Allahabad recorded a scorching 44.4°C, making it one of the hottest places in the region, while Najibabad reported a relatively lower minimum temperature of 17.5°C.
In contrast to the intense heat in the north, several parts of the northeast and western Himalayan belt are expected to receive rainfall. A fresh western disturbance is likely to influence weather patterns from April 23, bringing showers to Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on April 25 and 26. This may provide some respite by slightly lowering temperatures in nearby areas.
The IMD has also forecast heatwave conditions in isolated pockets across multiple states, including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and parts of central and eastern India over the next few days.
Authorities have urged people to take precautions against the rising heat, including staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, and minimizing outdoor activities where possible, as the region braces for one of the season’s earliest intense heat spells.
