Berlin: A violent confrontation inside a gurdwara in the Duisburg locality of Moers city in Germany left at least 11 people injured, triggering a large-scale police response and raising concerns over internal disputes within the religious community.

According to reports, the clash broke out on Monday when two groups engaged in a heated altercation inside the place of worship. Eyewitness accounts and videos circulating online suggest that the situation quickly spiraled out of control, with participants using sharp objects such as knives and kirpans during the fight.

Local media, including Bild, reported that nearly 40 individuals were involved in the incident. Police were forced to deploy significant resources, including specialized tactical units, to bring the situation under control.

Witnesses claimed that, in addition to bladed weapons, pepper spray was used to subdue rivals, and at least one firearm was discharged during the clash. Authorities later indicated that the weapon may have been a blank-firing pistol, based on shell casings recovered from the scene, though the firearm itself has not yet been located.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the violence may have been linked to an ongoing dispute over the election of the gurdwara’s management committee and control over its funds. Tensions between former and current members had reportedly been building for some time.

A 56-year-old witness described the incident as premeditated, stating that individuals appeared to be prepared with pepper spray and weapons before the confrontation began. Panic reportedly spread among worshippers, with many fleeing the premises to avoid being caught in the violence.

Emergency responders treated the injured at the scene, and officials confirmed that none of the victims are in life-threatening condition.

Police have detained at least one suspect, while investigators continue to examine the sequence of events and identify those responsible. Authorities are working to determine the exact cause of the clash and whether further arrests will follow.
