Srinagar: Authorities across Jammu and Kashmir have significantly strengthened security arrangements at religious sites and tourist destinations in the lead-up to the first anniversary of the deadly Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives last year.
The April 22, 2025 attack at the scenic Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, carried out by militants, had left 25 tourists and a local pony operator dead, triggering widespread fear and a sharp decline in tourism across the region. In the aftermath, several tourist locations were temporarily shut and later reopened in phases following detailed security assessments.
With the anniversary approaching, security forces have been placed on heightened alert, particularly after recent inputs suggesting possible militant movement in border districts like Kathua and Samba. Officials said multiple coordination meetings have been conducted to ensure a robust and foolproof security mechanism.
Prominent religious sites, including the revered Vaishno Devi shrine in the Trikuta Hills, are now under intensified surveillance. Senior officers have carried out on-ground inspections to assess preparedness and ensure effective deployment of personnel.
Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Udhampur-Reasi range reviewed arrangements along the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage route, including Katra town and nearby villages. Emphasis has been placed on activating Village Defence Guards and maintaining close coordination among security agencies. Police teams have also been directed to increase patrols and remain vigilant in sensitive areas.
In border regions, the Samba district police have conducted extensive inspections of checkpoints and border outposts. Officers have stressed the importance of maintaining a strong presence and enhancing coordination with the Border Security Force to prevent any infiltration attempts. Night patrols and surprise ambushes have also been intensified along vulnerable routes.
Meanwhile, as tourist footfall gradually returns to Pahalgam, authorities have rolled out additional safety measures. A QR code-based identification system has been introduced for tourism service providers, enabling quick verification of registered operators such as pony handlers, vendors, and local businesses.
Senior police officials have directed that security arrangements around key installations and popular destinations be further strengthened to ensure a safe environment for visitors. The move aims to restore confidence among tourists while maintaining strict vigilance across the Union Territory.
