Ajmer: Two women lost their lives and 31 others were injured after a passenger bus plunged into a gorge in Rajasthan’s Ajmer district on Sunday, police officials said.
The accident took place in the Pushkar Ghati area when the bus, carrying 33 passengers, reportedly lost control and veered off the road before falling into a deep gorge. The vehicle eventually got lodged in trees and bushes, preventing it from descending further.
Passengers were travelling from Ajmer to Pushkar and were heading to a nearby village to attend a function when the incident occurred. According to Circle Officer (Rural) Ramchandra Chaudhary, the mishap took place shortly after the bus crossed Sanjhisar.
Local residents were the first to respond, carrying out rescue efforts using improvised ropes made from clothing to pull the injured out of the gorge.
All the injured were initially taken to a government hospital in Pushkar and later referred to Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Ajmer for further treatment. Hospital Superintendent Dr Arvind Khare confirmed that 30 patients are currently undergoing treatment, while one person has been discharged.
The deceased have been identified as Pooja (28) and Vimla Devi (50), police said.
Rescue operations involved teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Civil Defence and local police. The accident also disrupted traffic in the Pushkar Ghati stretch, leading to a significant jam in the area.
