Chandigarh: The Punjab government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has been prioritizing the overall welfare of children, particularly those from economically weaker families and orphaned children. Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur highlighted the state’s commitment to ensuring that vulnerable children receive proper care and opportunities for growth.

Dr. Kaur said that under the Sponsorship Scheme, financially weak, destitute, and orphaned children are being provided with financial assistance of ₹4,000 per child per month. The scheme benefits children whose families are unable to support them due to economic hardships, as well as orphaned children living with relatives.

She further informed that this assistance continues until the child turns 18, and so far, a total of 5,475 children across Punjab have benefited from the initiative.

Emphasizing the broader aim of the scheme, Dr. Kaur said that the program is not limited to financial support but also reflects the government’s vision to secure a brighter future for such children. The assistance helps them continue their education, pursue their aspirations, and integrate into mainstream society.

Reiterating the government’s commitment, the minister said the ultimate goal is to ensure that every child receives quality education, grows into a self-reliant citizen, and contributes positively to the development of the state. The government is undertaking special measures for the holistic development of children who remain on the margins of society.
