New Delhi: In the 132nd episode of Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday cautioned against politicising the ongoing crisis in West Asia, while warning of a potential global fuel crunch and its implications for India.

Describing March as an “eventful” month globally, Modi said hopes of a stable recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic had been disrupted by fresh geopolitical tensions. Referring to conflicts in India’s extended neighbourhood, particularly in West Asia, he noted that the situation continues to evolve with significant economic and humanitarian consequences.

Highlighting the human dimension, the Prime Minister said that lakhs of Indian families have relatives working in Gulf countries, adding that over one crore Indians currently reside in the region. He expressed gratitude to Gulf nations for their support and assistance to Indian citizens during the crisis.

On the economic front, Modi underscored that the conflict-hit region plays a critical role in India’s energy security. He said disruptions there are contributing to a developing global petrol and diesel crisis, raising concerns about supply constraints and rising prices.

Calling it a “challenging time,” Modi said India is managing the situation through strong international partnerships and capabilities built over the past decade, which are helping the country respond effectively to external shocks.

He also urged political stakeholders to avoid deriving political mileage from the situation, stressing that issues concerning the welfare of 140 crore Indians should remain above partisan interests. Reiterating the need for unity, Modi said collective resolve would be essential to navigate the emerging global challenges.
