Bakrabi/Sairang: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Bairabi-Sairang railway line in Mizoram on September 13, Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced. The project will finally bring Aizawl, the state capital, onto India’s railway map, as Sairang lies just outside the city.

Lalduhoma shared the update during the Mizoram Police Service Association conference in Aizawl on Friday. He confirmed that the Prime Minister will reach Aizawl on September 12 and stay overnight before dedicating the new line the following day.

The Chief Minister said he has already discussed details of the visit with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. He added that Sairang station will be upgraded into a world-class facility, with Rajdhani train services planned to run from the new terminal.

The 51.38-km project is a key part of the Centre’s Act East policy, aimed at strengthening connectivity and boosting economic integration in the Northeast. Once operational, the line will connect Aizawl with Silchar in Assam and extend Mizoram’s links to the rest of the country.

Engineers describe the line as a marvel of modern construction, with 48 tunnels spanning 12.8 km, 55 major bridges, and 87 minor bridges. One of the bridges, numbered 196, stands 104 metres tall—higher than Delhi’s Qutub Minar.

The new railway line is expected to transform travel, trade, and connectivity in Mizoram, opening new economic and cultural opportunities for the state.
