TARN TARAN: In a strategic move ahead of the 2027 State Assembly elections, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal has appointed Kanchanpreet Kaur as the new Halka Incharge for the Tarn Taran constituency. The appointment, announced on Sunday, recognizes the young leader’s rising influence within the party following her high-profile involvement in the recent local political landscape.
Sukhbir Singh Badal lauded Kanchanpreet Kaur as a “courageous and energetic” leader who has proven her mettle under challenging circumstances. He specifically highlighted her unwavering commitment during the November 2025 Tarn Taran by-election, where she led a spirited campaign for her mother, Principal Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa. Despite facing significant legal hurdles and what the party described as “state-sponsored pressure,” including a late-night court hearing that ultimately led to her release, Kaur emerged as a prominent face for the Akali Dal in the Majha region.
“Kanchanpreet Kaur has demonstrated the kind of fearless leadership that the Shiromani Akali Dal stands for,” Badal stated in his announcement. He emphasized that her appointment is a testament to the party’s focus on empowering youth and women to lead from the front. The SAD President noted that her ability to connect with the grassroots workers and stand firm against administrative challenges makes her the ideal candidate to strengthen the party’s organizational structure in this crucial border-belt constituency.
The move is seen as an attempt by the SAD to regain lost ground in Tarn Taran after the 2025 by-poll, which saw a shift in the local political dynamic. By elevating Kaur—who also contested the Zila Parishad elections from the Kasel zone—the party aims to build a fresh, resilient leadership team capable of taking on the ruling administration in the upcoming 2027 polls.
