India Defines Policy on International Sporting Events Amid Ties with Pakistan

New Delhi: India has outlined a clear stance on its participation in international sporting events, particularly those involving Pakistan, linking the approach to its broader diplomatic policy with the neighboring country.

According to the new framework, Indian teams will not travel to Pakistan for bilateral sporting events, nor will Pakistani teams be allowed to play in India in such arrangements. However, the government clarified that this restriction does not extend to multilateral and international events.

For global tournaments held in India or abroad, Indian athletes and teams will participate even if Pakistani players are present, ensuring compliance with international sporting practices and protecting the interests of Indian sportspersons. Likewise, Pakistan’s participation will be permitted in multilateral tournaments hosted by India.

India is also focusing on strengthening its image as a credible hub for international sports. To facilitate this, the visa process for sportspersons, team officials, technical staff, and office-bearers of global sports governing bodies will be simplified. Multi-entry visas, valid for the official tenure up to a maximum of five years, will be granted on priority to international officials.

The government further assured that due protocol and courtesies would be extended to heads of international sports governing bodies during their visits, in line with established norms. This initiative signals India’s intent to both safeguard its national policy on Pakistan and enhance its standing as a global destination for sporting excellence.
