NEW DELHI — The Ministry of Defence on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, finalized two significant contracts worth a combined total of ₹5,083 crore to bolster India’s maritime security and air defence capabilities. The agreements include the procurement of six Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) for the Indian Coast Guard and the acquisition of sophisticated surface-to-air missiles for the Indian Navy’s frontline warships.

The first contract, valued at ₹2,901 crore, was signed with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) for the delivery of six ALH Mk-III helicopters designed for maritime roles. These twin-engine aircraft are equipped with state-of-the-art features intended to outperform existing airborne platforms. According to the ministry, the helicopters will be capable of performing a wide range of security missions from both shore-based airfields and naval vessels. The induction of these helicopters is expected to significantly improve the Coast Guard’s ability to protect offshore installations, artificial islands, and the marine environment, while also providing better security for local fishermen.

The second agreement, worth ₹2,182 crore, was signed with Russia’s JSC Rosoboronexport for the procurement of Shtil surface-to-air vertical launch missiles and their associated frames. These missiles are slated for deployment on the Indian Navy’s warships to provide a more robust air defence architecture against diverse aerial threats. The ministry noted that the Shtil system offers rapid-reaction and all-weather engagement capabilities, which are essential for survival in contested maritime zones. Furthermore, the contract highlights the enduring defence partnership between India and Russia, which continues to be a cornerstone of India’s strategic alignment.
