Washington/Riyadh: Tensions in West Asia escalated sharply after two drones struck the United States Embassy in Riyadh, prompting US President Donald Trump to warn that Washington’s response would be revealed “soon.”
In an interview with NewsNation, Trump indicated that the United States was preparing retaliatory measures following the embassy attack and the deaths of American military personnel amid the ongoing confrontation with Iran. A journalist from the network shared details of the interview on social media platform X, quoting the president as saying that the nature of the response would become clear shortly.
Saudi Arabia’s Defence Ministry confirmed that two unmanned aerial vehicles targeted the US diplomatic compound in the capital early Tuesday. According to an initial assessment shared by the ministry, the incident caused a minor fire and limited structural damage. No immediate reports of casualties were released.
The strike on the Riyadh embassy comes against the backdrop of an intensifying military campaign involving the United States and Israel against Iran. In recent days, coordinated air operations have reportedly hit multiple Iranian positions, with Trump suggesting the offensive could extend for weeks.
Tehran and its regional allies have retaliated with missile and drone attacks across the region. Targets have included sites in Israel as well as key installations in Gulf nations. Energy infrastructure in Qatar and diplomatic premises in Saudi Arabia have been among the locations affected.
A separate incident on Monday saw the US Embassy compound in Kuwait come under fire, underscoring the widening scope of the confrontation.
The conflict has rattled what were once considered relatively secure hubs in the Middle East. Cities such as Dubai have reported incoming projectiles, disrupting air traffic and stranding hundreds of thousands of passengers worldwide. Global energy markets have also reacted sharply, with oil prices surging amid fears of prolonged instability in a region critical to world supply.
