PCB Cracks Down After T20 World Cup Setback, Senior Stars Hit With Multi-Million Rupee Fines

Karachi: In the wake of Pakistan’s underwhelming exit from the T20 World Cup 2026, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has imposed substantial fines on several senior players, signalling a tougher stance on performance and accountability.

Captain Babar Azam, pace spearhead Shaheen Afridi, and all-rounder Shadab Khan are among those each fined PKR 5 million (around ₹17 lakh). The penalties come after Pakistan’s campaign ended in the Super Eights stage of the 20-team tournament.

Early Promise, Sudden Collapse

Placed in Group A alongside India, the Netherlands, Namibia and the United States, Pakistan progressed to the Super Eights after securing wins over the associate sides. However, their performances in the second phase failed to meet expectations, resulting in an early elimination.

A first-round loss to India in Sri Lanka last month had already drawn criticism from fans and former players. The subsequent inability to regain momentum compounded concerns over team consistency and strategy.

Board Signals Zero Tolerance Policy

According to reports in Pakistani media, the PCB has decided to abandon what it views as a pattern of leniency toward repeated underachievement. The fines are intended to send a clear message that seniority will not shield players from consequences.

Sources indicated that the board plans to link future financial rewards strictly to measurable performance benchmarks. Players may now be required to justify their place in the squad not only through selection but also through tangible contributions on the field.

Focus on Accountability and Rebuilding

The move reflects growing pressure on Pakistan cricket authorities to address recurring issues in major tournaments. Analysts say the board’s action could mark the beginning of broader structural changes, potentially impacting team composition and leadership roles ahead of upcoming international fixtures.

While critics argue that monetary penalties alone may not resolve deeper tactical and developmental challenges, PCB officials appear intent on reinforcing a culture of responsibility within the national setup.

With scrutiny intensifying and supporters demanding better results, Pakistan’s cricketing leadership faces the task of rebuilding confidence before the next global event.
