NAGPUR – A major investigation has been launched into the suspected leak of the Maharashtra Board Class 12 (HSC) Chemistry question paper after it was found circulating on social media shortly before the exam. Preliminary police inquiries suggest the involvement of a private coaching center operative who allegedly leaked the paper in exchange for money.
The malpractice was uncovered on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at St. Ursula Girls’ High School & Junior College, after a female student’s suspicious behavior alerted exam invigilators.
How the Leak Was Detected
The incident unfolded during the morning session of the Chemistry exam:

Suspicious Activity: A student’s frequent requests to use the washroom raised the suspicion of the exam hall supervisors.

Smartphone Seizure: Upon inspection, invigilators recovered a smartphone from the student.

WhatsApp Evidence: A digital forensic analysis of the device revealed that the Chemistry question paper had been shared in a WhatsApp group nearly an hour before the examination commenced. The group also contained detailed answers to the questions.
The Private Coaching Link
Based on the student’s interrogation, Nagpur Police have identified a teacher from a private tuition center as the suspected mastermind.

Monetary Exchange: The individual allegedly sold the leaked paper to approximately 13 students via messaging apps.

Wider Scope: Disturbingly, investigators are now probing whether the HSC Physics paper, held on February 16, was also compromised in a similar manner.

A formal case has been registered at the Sadar Police Station under the Maharashtra Prevention of Malpractices at University, Board, and Other Specified Examinations Act.

This incident marks the second major cheating scandal of the 2026 HSC session, following the suspension of several staff members in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar earlier this month for aiding mass copying.
