Maharashtra Government Cancels 5% Muslim Reservation in Jobs, Education

Mumbai: The Government of Maharashtra has scrapped the five per cent reservation granted to members of the Muslim community in government jobs and educational institutions.

A Government Resolution (GR) was issued on Tuesday stating that the earlier ordinance providing the quota had lapsed and was also under interim stay by the court.

The previous Congress-NCP government had introduced an ordinance granting 16 per cent reservation to the Maratha community and five per cent to Muslims under the Special Backward Category (A). However, with the ordinance no longer in force and legal proceedings pending, the state has withdrawn the provision.

According to the new GR, all earlier decisions and circulars issued in 2014 regarding the five per cent reservation for socially and educationally backward Muslims in government and semi-government jobs, as well as educational institutions, stand cancelled.

The order further states that authorities will stop issuing caste and non-creamy layer certificates to Muslims under the Special Backward Category (A) with immediate effect.
