Mumbai: At least four people were killed and nine others injured after a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus allegedly ran over pedestrians on Station Road in Bhandup West on Monday night. The incident occurred around 10 pm, triggering panic in the busy locality. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, where they are currently undergoing treatment.
Mumbai Police Joint Commissioner Satya Narayan Chaudhary said medical care is being provided to all the injured and a detailed probe into the circumstances leading to the accident is underway. Senior police officials, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police, were present at the scene to supervise rescue and investigation efforts. The bus driver has been taken into custody as part of the inquiry.
According to police officials from Zone 7, preliminary information suggests that the BEST bus lost control before hitting several people on the road. Emergency response teams, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade, local police personnel, BEST staff and 108 ambulance services, were immediately deployed to the spot. While initial reports indicated that more than ten people may have been injured, authorities said the exact number and the severity of injuries are still being verified.
The tragic incident has revived memories of a similar and deadly BEST bus accident in Kurla last year. On December 9, an electric BEST bus had rammed into pedestrians and around 22 vehicles on SG Barve Marg before crashing into a cement gate near Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Nagar. That accident claimed nine lives and left 42 people injured, raising serious concerns about road safety and public transport management in Mumbai.
