Kolkata– The Supreme Court on Wednesday transferred the suo motu case concerning the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College to the Calcutta High Court.

A Bench led by Justice MM Sundresh instructed that the High Court would now supervise compliance with the directions previously issued by the Supreme Court in the case. The court also ordered that all case documents be sent to the high court.

The apex court, which had taken suo motu cognisance of the incident in 2024, directed that a copy of the latest status report be provided to the victim’s parents.

The postgraduate trainee doctor’s body was discovered in the hospital seminar room on August 9 last year. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested by Kolkata Police the following day. On January 20, a Kolkata trial court sentenced Roy to life imprisonment until death, following his conviction.

The gruesome crime sparked widespread outrage across the nation and led to prolonged protests in West Bengal. Even after the primary conviction, the Supreme Court had continued monitoring related issues, including addressing unauthorised absences among doctors.

In response to the case, the top court had established a National Task Force on August 20 last year to develop protocols aimed at safeguarding medical professionals.
