Goa: Bollywood star Ranveer Singh has issued a formal apology after facing heavy criticism online for mimicking a scene from Kantara: A Legend Chapter-1 during the closing ceremony of the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on 28 November.

The actor, known for his exuberant stage presence, attempted to recreate a moment from the film’s intense Daiva performance—originally enacted by actor-director Rishab Shetty. During the act, Singh stuck out his tongue and exaggerated the expression, a gesture that audience members initially took lightly but quickly turned contentious once clips spread across social media.

Many viewers accused Singh of trivialising a deeply spiritual ritual portrayed in the film, calling the act insensitive and disrespectful.

Ranveer Singh Responds: “Never Intended to Hurt Anyone”

After the backlash gained momentum, Singh addressed the controversy through a statement posted on his Instagram story. Emphasising his respect for India’s diverse traditions, the actor clarified that his intent was purely appreciative.

“My intention was to highlight Rishab’s incredible performance in the film,” he wrote. “Actor to actor, I know how much it takes to pull off a scene like that, and he has my utmost admiration.”

He added that he has “always deeply respected every culture, tradition and belief,” and extended a “sincere apology” to anyone who felt hurt by his attempt at imitation.

Rishab Shetty Yet to Comment Publicly

Although both actors were present at the ceremony, Shetty has not made any public statement regarding the incident. However, fans of Kantara voiced strong disapproval online, with many noting that the sacred Daiva portrayal holds cultural significance that should not be reduced to casual mimicry.

A Growing Trend of On-Stage Missteps?

This is the second incident in recent days involving Ranveer Singh drawing criticism for a stage performance, prompting conversations about celebrity responsibility when engaging with regional or spiritual art forms.

IFFI organisers have not commented on the controversy, but industry insiders say the episode may prompt future caution among performers who reference culturally rooted works at public events.

Despite the uproar, Singh’s swift acknowledgement and apology have been welcomed by some fans, who view the gesture as an attempt to correct an unintended misstep.
