Islamabad— The enforcement of Section 144 in Islamabad and Rawalpindi failed to deter Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters from staging a protest outside the Islamabad High Court on Tuesday amid rising concerns over the health and prolonged isolation of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Dozens of PTI workers gathered despite restrictions on public assemblies, demanding access to Khan, who has reportedly not met anyone for nearly a month while lodged in Adiala jail. The protest drew loud calls for justice and transparency surrounding his condition.
Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry warned that Section 144 would be implemented “without discrimination,” stressing that action would be taken against gatherings in both cities. He said the decision followed intelligence reports highlighting potential threats of terror groups exploiting crowds or political gatherings.
Security was tightened across Rawalpindi and Islamabad, with roadblocks, checkpoints, and restrictions around Adiala jail and the capital’s Red Zone. Authorities also cited concerns about misuse of VPNs and encrypted communication by extremist elements, prompting enhanced monitoring by the interior ministry and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority.
PTI leaders criticised officials for denying court-approved visitation rights. Asad Qaiser said party lawmakers planned to assemble outside the Islamabad High Court and later march toward Adiala jail, accusing the jail administration of ignoring judicial orders.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, who was refused access to Khan multiple times, joined calls for transparency. Meanwhile, Imran Khan’s family has also been unable to meet him for weeks, heightening speculation about his health, though government officials maintain he is stable.
Rawalpindi police said more than 3,000 personnel had been deployed as Section 144 remains in force for three days, prohibiting rallies and public assemblies. PTI figures, including Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, are expected to continue demonstrations throughout the week.
