Punjab Roadways Strike Ends After Government Accepts Key Demands, Bus Services to Resume

Chandigarh— Commuters across Punjab can finally expect relief as the strike by PRTC and Punjab Roadways employees has been called off following successful negotiations with the state government.

The strike, which had disrupted bus services for several days, caused significant inconvenience, particularly for women who rely on government buses for free travel. Long queues and overcrowded private transport had become common across major routes.

On Tuesday, the PRTC-PUNBUS Contract Workers Union announced that it is withdrawing the strike after the government agreed to its primary demands. Union representatives confirmed that the state has consented to release all arrested employees and withdraw the cases filed against them during the protests.

Employees had been demanding the regularisation of contract workers, the scrapping of the kilometre scheme, and the release of detained staff. With the government’s assurances, the union decided to end the protest.

All government buses are expected to resume full operations immediately, restoring normalcy for passengers statewide. The union is likely to hold internal discussions soon to plan its future course of action.
