Move to Declare Bikram Majithia’s Brother-in-Law a Fugitive Gains Pace as Vigilance Approaches Mohali Court

Chandigarh: The Punjab Vigilance Bureau has escalated its probe against Gajpat Singh Grewal—brother-in-law of former minister and senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Majithia—by seeking to have him declared a fugitive after repeated attempts to execute an arrest warrant failed.

Officials confirmed that the Bureau has filed a petition before a Mohali district court, requesting legal proceedings to formally categorize Grewal as an absconder. The court is scheduled to hear the application on December 1.

Bikram Majithia’s brother-in-law Grewal is an accused in a disproportionate-assets investigation, and Vigilance officers say the move to declare him a fugitive follows several unsuccessful efforts to secure his presence. Though an arrest warrant had already been issued earlier, teams were unable to locate him.

Vigilance Cites Non-Compliance

In its submission to the court, the Vigilance Bureau noted that notices were delivered to multiple addresses linked to the accused, including his residence in Sangrur and properties in Delhi’s Vasant Vihar and Defence Colony. According to officials, Grewal was added to the case file only recently, after which investigators also included charges related to criminal conspiracy.

Vigilance authorities say they intended to question him in connection with the fresh allegations and issued summons accordingly. However, his failure to appear prompted another round of summons, which too went unheeded.

With no cooperation forthcoming from the accused, the Bureau has now turned to the court for permission to initiate fugitive-declaration proceedings—an action that could pave the way for property attachment and widened search measures.

Further developments in the case are expected after the December 1 hearing.
