Thiruvananthapuram: Five international flights headed to Sri Lanka were diverted to Thiruvananthapuram on Friday after severe weather conditions over Colombo made landing unsafe, the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport Ltd (TIAL) said.

TIAL officials said the diversions were triggered by a cyclone alert issued for Colombo, and more flights may be rerouted if the weather continues to deteriorate.

Among the diverted aircraft were two SriLankan Airlines flights from Dubai and Doha, an Etihad Airways flight from Abu Dhabi, and an AirAsia service from Kuala Lumpur. An IndiGo flight traveling from Mumbai to Colombo was also redirected to Thiruvananthapuram.

According to TIAL, the Etihad Airways flight landed at 3.44 am, followed by the AirAsia aircraft at 4.37 am. The two SriLankan Airlines flights touched down at 7.44 am and 7.55 am, while the IndiGo flight arrived at 9.49 am.

Airport officials said all five aircraft remained grounded in Thiruvananthapuram through the morning as adverse weather in Colombo persisted.
