US Takes Control of Russian-Flagged Tanker as Naval Tensions Rise in Atlantic

Atlantic: The United States took custody of a Russian-flagged oil tanker in the Atlantic Ocean, intensifying its efforts to enforce sanctions and tighten control over oil movements linked to Venezuela. The action has added a new layer of strain to already fragile relations between Washington and Moscow.

Officials said the tanker, which was not carrying cargo at the time, had previously been used to move Venezuelan crude despite international restrictions. The vessel had earlier declined to cooperate with authorities and later changed its registration to a Russian flag, raising concerns among US agencies monitoring sanctioned maritime activity.

The interception was carried out by the US Coast Guard with support from military special forces. British assets, including aerial surveillance and a naval vessel, also assisted in the operation as part of a broader international push to curb sanctions evasion.

The situation unfolded against a tense backdrop, with Russian naval units, including a submarine, reported to be operating in the area during a prolonged pursuit of the tanker. While no direct confrontation was reported, the presence of Russian military assets highlighted the risk of escalation.

Images broadcast by Russian media showed a helicopter hovering near the tanker as US personnel boarded the ship. American authorities maintain that the vessel has been part of a network used to transport oil in violation of sanctions imposed on Venezuela.

In a separate move, US forces also stopped another tanker carrying Venezuelan oil off the northeastern coast of South America. That vessel was reportedly fully loaded, marking another step in Washington’s recent campaign to intercept shipments tied to the Venezuelan state oil sector.

Senior officials in Washington said only energy shipments that comply with US law and national security requirements would be allowed to proceed. The latest actions signal a tougher stance on maritime enforcement and underscore the growing geopolitical friction demonstrating how energy, security, and diplomacy continue to collide on the world’s oceans.
