Washington: US President Donald Trump has warned of imposing a steep 200 per cent tariff on French wines and champagnes, linking the move to France’s refusal to join his proposed ‘Board of Peace’ initiative aimed at addressing global conflicts.
Speaking to reporters, Trump reacted sharply when asked about French President Emmanuel Macron’s reported decision to stay away from the initiative. “Did he say that? Well, nobody wants him because he will be out of office very soon,” Trump remarked, adding that the tariff threat could change Paris’ stance. “I’ll put a 200 per cent tariff on his wines and champagnes, and he’ll join — but he doesn’t have to,” he said.
Sources close to Macron confirmed on Monday that France does not intend to participate in the initiative at this stage. The proposal, first floated by Trump last September while outlining his plan to end the Gaza conflict, has since evolved into a broader framework focused on resolving international disputes.
According to a draft charter circulated by the US administration to around 60 countries, membership in the Board of Peace would require a contribution of $1 billion for participation extending beyond three years. The proposal has triggered cautious responses from several governments, with diplomats warning that the plan could potentially undermine the role of the United Nations.
Trump also revealed that Russian President Vladimir Putin has been invited to join the board. “He’s been invited,” the US President said, without providing further details.
The developments signal rising diplomatic friction between Washington and Paris, even as global reactions to the proposed initiative continue to unfold.
