Tensions Surge as Donald Trump’s Deadline Nears; Tehran Plans Human Chain Shield

Tehran: Escalating rhetoric between Washington and Tehran has pushed the ongoing conflict to a critical juncture, with Donald Trump issuing fresh warnings of sweeping attacks on Iran’s infrastructure even as Iranian authorities mobilise civilians in a symbolic show of defiance.

With a deadline looming over the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, Trump has expanded his threat beyond military targets, stating that key installations such as power plants and bridges could be struck if Tehran fails to comply. He suggested that the United States possesses the capability to inflict widespread damage within a short span, underlining that previous warnings had already been extended multiple times.

In response, Iranian officials have announced a nationwide initiative encouraging young citizens to gather around critical facilities, including power stations, to form what they describe as symbolic “human chains.” The move, backed by the country’s youth affairs authorities, is being presented as a demonstration of public commitment to safeguarding national infrastructure.

Alireza Rahimi said the idea originated from students, artists and youth groups, calling it a peaceful expression of solidarity and resilience amid growing external pressure.

The developments come as diplomatic efforts remain strained. Tehran has reportedly rejected a temporary ceasefire framework and instead pushed for assurances aimed at permanently ending hostilities. Iranian representatives have conveyed their stance through regional intermediaries, stressing the need for guarantees against future attacks.

Meanwhile, military tensions continue to rise across the region, with both sides exchanging threats and carrying out strikes on strategic targets. Concerns are mounting globally over the potential humanitarian and economic fallout, particularly if key energy routes or civilian infrastructure are affected.

Despite the hardened positions, backchannel talks are said to be ongoing, with mediators attempting to keep dialogue alive as the situation edges closer to a possible escalation.
