Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday issued a strong warning of potential retaliation against Western nations for detaining Russian-linked commercial vessels, characterizing the maritime seizures as state-sanctioned piracy. Speaking during an inspection visit to a naval warship participating in military exercises in the Pacific Ocean, Putin stated that actions targeting Russian merchant ships violate established international maritime laws and frameworks.
Addressing naval commanders, Putin condemned Western enforcement actions as acts of robbery and warned that Moscow retains the right to execute symmetrical responses. The Russian President emphasized that potential retaliatory operations would not be restricted geographically to the locations of seized vessels, stating that Russia could respond across any maritime domain deemed necessary, including strategic corridors in the Pacific region.
During the presidential briefing, Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Viktor Liina reported that Russian naval forces are fully prepared to initiate boardings and inspections of commercial shipping belonging to designated non-friendly nations. Liina noted that many vessels operated by European carriers rely on flags of convenience, forming what he described as an opposing shadow fleet. Russian authorities confirmed that naval warships have begun escorting domestic commercial vessels across sensitive transit zones to deter further interdictions.
The escalation follows recent maritime operations by European nations, including the United Kingdom and France, which have detained several oil tankers suspected of operating within Russia’s shadow fleet to bypass international trade sanctions imposed following the 2022 conflict in Ukraine. Reinforcing the administration’s stance, Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev asserted that Russian forces possess the operational capability to expand maritime targeting operations against hostile commercial shipping far beyond the Black Sea basin.
