Durban (South Africa (: At least 11 people were killed in a road accident involving a minibus taxi and a truck in South Africa’s eastern KwaZulu-Natal province on Thursday, according to provincial authorities and emergency responders.
The crash occurred barely a week after another fatal incident in the country in which 14 schoolchildren lost their lives in a head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a truck, raising fresh concerns over road safety.
KwaZulu-Natal transport department official Siboniso Duma said preliminary reports indicate that 11 people, including a school-going child, died at the spot. Emergency services rushed to the scene, where multiple passengers were found with critical injuries.
Garrith Jamieson, spokesperson for ALS Paramedics, confirmed that 11 fatalities had been recorded and said several others were severely injured. He added that the minibus driver was trapped inside the wreckage and required rescue efforts by emergency teams.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash.
