Marco Rubio Tells Why Donald Trump Imposed Additional Tariff on India

Washington DC: Despite strong bilateral ties, the United States under President Donald Trump imposed additional tariffs on India in response to its continued imports of Russian oil, Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed during a recent interview.

Speaking on ABC’s Good Morning America, Rubio addressed growing scrutiny over the Trump administration’s handling of the Ukraine conflict, particularly criticism suggesting former President Trump often refrained from following through on tough rhetoric against Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Defending the administration’s approach, Rubio cited trade measures taken against countries aligned economically with Moscow. “We’ve actually taken steps. For instance, we imposed new tariffs on India—a nation that remains one of our closest strategic partners. That decision was connected to their ongoing oil purchases from Russia,” Rubio said.

The remarks offer a rare public acknowledgment of economic penalties targeting a U.S. ally as part of broader efforts to curb financial support for Russia amid its prolonged war in Ukraine.

India, which has consistently maintained a non-aligned stance in global conflicts, significantly increased its imports of discounted Russian crude following Western sanctions on Moscow. While the U.S. has expressed concern over this development, New Delhi has defended its actions as a matter of national energy security and economic pragmatism.

Rubio also indicated that dialogue with Indian officials remains ongoing, noting that meetings had taken place as recently as the previous day. “We continue to engage with India at a high level. The relationship remains strong, but certain issues—like the energy trade with Russia—have to be addressed through direct action,” he added.

India’s growing global role and its importance in counterbalancing China in the Indo-Pacific make it a crucial partner for Washington. However, the complexities of the Ukraine conflict have introduced new friction points, even among allies.

While there has been no formal confirmation from the Indian government regarding specific tariff measures linked to Russian oil purchases, Rubio’s comments suggest a more assertive approach by the U.S. in aligning its partners with its sanctions regime against Moscow.

As global diplomatic dynamics shift, the balancing act between strategic cooperation and policy enforcement appears to be an increasingly delicate one for Washington.
