Tehran: Tensions across West Asia escalated sharply on Wednesday as Iran launched a fresh wave of missile and drone attacks following the killing of two of its top security figures in strikes attributed to Israel.
Iranian authorities confirmed the deaths of Ali Larijani, a key figure in the country’s security establishment, and Gholam Reza Soleimani, who headed the Basij volunteer force under the Revolutionary Guard. Their deaths mark a significant setback for Tehran’s leadership amid an intensifying conflict that has already rattled the region.
In response, Iran fired a barrage of projectiles targeting Israeli territory and parts of the Gulf, signalling its intent to escalate rather than de-escalate the confrontation. Security analysts say the latest retaliation underscores the widening scope of the conflict and raises fears of a prolonged military standoff.
Meanwhile, Israeli forces continued operations beyond Iranian territory, striking positions linked to Hezbollah in Lebanon. According to Lebanese health authorities, an airstrike in the Nabatiyeh region left at least three people dead and several others injured, while rescue teams searched for those still missing.
The ongoing strikes have triggered a humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, with government estimates suggesting that over a million residents have been displaced. Casualty figures continue to rise on multiple fronts, with fatalities reported in Israel from missile attacks and losses also recorded among United States military personnel stationed in the region.
As both sides intensify military actions, the situation shows little sign of easing, with fears mounting that the conflict could draw in more countries and further destabilise an already volatile region.
