Toronto: Canadian authorities have arrested a 32-year-old man in connection with the killing of his Indian-origin partner, Himanshi Khurana, nearly seven months after her death in Toronto.

Khurana, 30, was found dead inside a residence in the city on December 20. Police subsequently determined that the case was a homicide and identified the incident as an alleged case of intimate partner violence.

Her partner, Abdul Ghafoori, was wanted on a first-degree murder charge. Toronto Police said he was taken into custody at a Toronto airport on Friday following a coordinated operation involving the force’s fugitive squad and homicide investigators, along with national and international law enforcement agencies.

Police did not disclose where Ghafoori had been staying before his return to Canada.

Police launched search after missing-person report

The investigation began on the night of December 19, when Toronto Police received information at around 10.41 pm about a woman reported missing from the Strachan Avenue and Wellington Street West area.

Officers began searching the area and located Khurana’s body inside a residence at approximately 6.30 am the following morning.

The death was subsequently investigated as Toronto’s 40th homicide of 2025.

As investigators examined the circumstances surrounding her death, they established that Khurana and Ghafoori were in an intimate relationship. Police later issued a Canada-wide warrant for Ghafoori’s arrest and released his photograph while seeking information about his whereabouts.

Arrest follows months-long search

The latest arrest came after months of efforts to locate the accused. Toronto Police said their fugitive and homicide teams worked with law enforcement agencies in Canada and abroad before bringing Ghafoori back to the country.

He is now facing a first-degree murder allegation in connection with Khurana’s death. The charge remains an allegation until proven in court.

Indian Consulate had offered assistance

Khurana’s death had also drawn a response from the Consulate General of India in Toronto.

Following the incident, the consulate expressed condolences to her family and said it was coordinating with Canadian authorities to provide assistance.

The consulate had described Khurana as a young Indian national and said officials had remained in contact with the family while efforts were underway to address the circumstances surrounding her death.

The arrest marks a significant development in the investigation, which had remained unresolved for several months.
