Washington: US President Donald Trump has issued a sharp warning to Iran over reports suggesting that Tehran may be imposing fees on oil tankers navigating the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Taking to his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said the reported move, if true, would be unacceptable and must be halted immediately. He cautioned that any attempt to interfere with maritime movement in the region could escalate tensions further.
In a separate post, Trump criticized Iran’s handling of oil transit through the strait, describing it as “dishonorable” and inconsistent with existing understandings between the two sides. He stressed that uninterrupted passage through the waterway was a key part of prior arrangements.
The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow channel connecting the Persian Gulf to global shipping routes, is one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, with a significant portion of global oil supplies passing through it daily.
Trump’s remarks come amid heightened geopolitical strain in the region, where disruptions to shipping lanes have already triggered volatility in global energy markets. While Iran has not officially responded to the allegations, the comments are expected to add pressure on ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at stabilising the situation.
