Java: A late-night road accident on Indonesia’s main island of Java has left at least 16 people dead after a passenger bus overturned on a toll road, authorities confirmed on Monday.

The bus, which was carrying 34 passengers, was en route from the capital city Jakarta to Yogyakarta when it veered out of control while navigating a curved exit ramp in the Krapyak toll road area of Semarang, Central Java. According to officials, the vehicle struck a concrete divider before flipping onto its side.

Budiono, a senior official with Indonesia’s search and rescue agency, said the impact was severe, causing several passengers to be violently thrown from their seats while others were pinned inside the damaged bus.

Emergency services, including police and rescue teams, reached the scene roughly 40 minutes after the crash. Six passengers were found dead at the site, while 10 others succumbed to their injuries either during transport to hospitals or while receiving medical care.

Eighteen survivors were admitted to two nearby hospitals. Of them, five were reported to be in critical condition, while 13 sustained serious injuries, officials said.

Television footage from the scene showed the overturned yellow bus lying on its side as rescue workers, police personnel, and local bystanders assisted in the operation. Ambulances were seen ferrying the injured and the deceased away from the crash site.

Authorities have begun an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident, while renewing calls for caution on busy toll roads, particularly during nighttime travel.
