New Delhi: Newly-appointed India ODI captain Shubman Gill has emphasized the importance of senior stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the team’s future, asserting that India “needs them” for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Speaking ahead of the second Test against the West Indies in New Delhi, Gill addressed speculation over a potential transition away from the Rohit-Kohli era in ODIs. “Yes, definitely,” he said when asked about their role in India’s next 50-over World Cup campaign.

Highlighting their experience and match-winning skills, Gill added, “There are very few players in the world with such skill, quality, and experience. Both Rohit and Kohli have won countless matches for India, and their expertise is invaluable.”

Both Rohit and Kohli have retired from T20 Internationals and Test cricket, leaving ODIs as the only format they currently play. While Kohli is in London and Rohit is in Mumbai, both are expected to join the ODI squad in New Delhi before India departs for Australia on October 15.

Gill, 25, who will lead India in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia starting October 19, said he aims to bring the same “calmness” to the dressing room that Rohit instilled during his captaincy tenure. “It’s an honour to lead India. The calmness of Rohit bhai and the friendships he created among the group — I want to imbibe that,” he said.

The young skipper also spoke about his rapport with head coach Gautam Gambhir, who is overseeing India’s transition phase. “Our relationship is good. We discuss how to make players feel secure and prepare a pool of fast bowlers, which is crucial going forward,” Gill revealed.

By publicly endorsing Rohit and Kohli, Gill appears to be sending a message to selectors and team management: while the team is evolving, its legends still have a pivotal role to play. His leadership debut in the Australia series will be closely watched, both for his on-field captaincy and his handling of the transition between India’s experienced stars and emerging talent.
