Manchester: In a shocking development, the Pakistani batsman Haider Ali has been suspended by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) following his arrest in the United Kingdom over a rape allegation. The incident has cast a shadow over Pakistan Shaheens’ ongoing tour of England.
The 24-year-old, who was representing Pakistan’s A team, was taken into custody by Greater Manchester Police after a complaint was lodged earlier this week regarding an alleged incident that took place on July 23 in Manchester.
British authorities confirmed the arrest but did not reveal the identity of the individual, in keeping with standard UK procedures during the initial stages of an investigation.
Greater Manchester Police, in an official statement, said that a report of rape was made to the police on August 4, 2025, wherein it was alleged that the incident occurred on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, in Manchester. It further stated that a 24-year-old male has been arrested and has been released on bail while enquiries continue.
Following the news, the PCB moved swiftly, announcing that Haider Ali would be suspended from all cricketing activities with immediate effect, pending the results of the investigation.
“The PCB has been informed of the legal matter involving Haider Ali and has taken immediate steps by suspending him provisionally. The board is committed to upholding both legal and ethical standards and will wait for the case to progress before determining any further action,” read a statement from the PCB.
It further stated that Ali is receiving legal support to ensure his rights are protected throughout the process, and reiterated the board’s respect for legal proceedings in the UK.
Ali, who debuted for Pakistan’s senior team in 2020, has featured in two ODIs and 35 T20 internationals. He was touring with the Pakistan Shaheens on a 15-day series that began just a day before the alleged incident.
The PCB clarified that it reserves the right to initiate disciplinary action under its internal code once the legal proceedings conclude.
